Comox Valley Literacy Now Steering Committee recruiting new members

Posted by dhoogland on September 29, 2011 under General | Be the First to Comment

Comox Valley Literacy Now (CVLN) is recruiting up to three new members of its Steering Committee. The current Steering Committee includes representatives from the Vancouver Island Regional Library, North Island College, Wachiay Friendship Centre, Adult Learning Centre, School District No. 71, Creative Employment Access Society, and literacy resource professionals. The Steering Committee would like to broaden its membership to include representatives from the Comox Valley business community (as a representative of a business association or group or as a business owner or manager) and from our community at large.

CVLN began in 2008 as the Comox Valley Literacy Now initiative with grants from Legacies 2010. We are currently in the process of becoming a registered non-profit society under the name the Comox Valley Literacy Network Association with the stated aim to improve the literacy levels of our community and promote literacy and learning. As a result of this change, the Steering Committee members will become the Directors of the Comox Valley Literacy Network Association Board. The development of the Comox Valley Community Literacy Plan and its annual review are the focus of our collaboration with learning organizations and stakeholders in literacy to address the literacy realities that exist within our community. CVLN’s intention is to be a hub for community networking and currently oversees two initiatives: the Essential Skills Partnership Initiative and the Family Literacy Outreach Initiative. CVLN has a coordinator who supports literacy projects, plans and facilitates literacy events and initiatives, and facilitates networking among learning organizations.

Steering Committee members (and in due course Directors) are expected to:

  • commit to one meeting per month
  • work collaboratively to implement the Comox Valley Community Literacy Plan
  • share ideas, resources, experience, and insight to move the Community Literacy Plan forward
  • provide support and direction to the Literacy Outreach Coordinator

Being involved as a Steering Committee member/Director on CVLN is an opportunity to connect with colleagues who are passionate about improving literacy in the Comox Valley as a strategy to address many of our socio-economic realities.  It is also an opportunity to learn strategic ways to embed literacy into your own organization and/or business. Finally, it is an opportunity for your organization, business, or self to participate in building a life-long learning community.

To apply as a Director please send an expression of interest to Danielle Hoogland, Comox Valley Literacy Outreach Coordinator at dhoogland@shaw.ca by Tuesday, October 11th, 2011. For more information, please contact Danielle Hoogland by email or by phone at 250-897-0525.
